Information via an e-mail forwarded by a friend also in touch with Steve.
Steve’s surgery did not go well. They worked on him for four straight hours, then sent him to recovery. When he woke up, they sent him home because his insurance wouldn’t cover his hospital stay. Nor, when he managed to get to the pharmacy to get the post-surg medications — including pain medications — his doctors had proscribed, would they cover those because they were not on a list of “approved” medications.
So he went home. His first night home, he collapsed and spent hours in a pool of his own blood and urine, barely able to move. I don’t know the exact details, but I’m told that when he finally managed to call 911, he was essentially advised to fill his prescriptions.
Eventually, a friend looked in on him and offered more help, including some assistance with one of the prescriptions. With that friend’s assistance he was able to get situated enough to call his doctor, who again turned him away because his insurance wouldn’t cover the hospital stay, and told him to fill his prescriptions.
His prescriptions are over $300 out of pocket.
I know some folks who are trying to assist, but his message sounded fairly desperate. The PayPal address remains sandramaples48yahoo.com.
(ETA: FYI, as I said, I’m unclear on some of the details here. I’m keeping an ear to the ground, and will post if I hear anything new. It’s not escaped my notice that some of this seems a little bit…well, hinky. I’m in touch with some folks who are working to get more information.)
(ETA2: While this is not the update I am waiting for, you can find Steve Bissette’s post about the current situation here.)
