Happy Mother’s Day
May. 9th, 2010 01:11 pmMy mother is a voracious reader. Terrifyingly so.
She’s retired these days, so she’s got a lot of time for it, but I remember when she was still working how she’d just tear through a stack of hardbacks from our tiny hometown library. I wonder sometimes whether or not the librarians feared her, or if they had to up their ordering habits just to keep her in new releases.
It pleases me to think that she did. I can only hope our local here in Columbia is keeping up with her now.
It’s intimidating to have a reader for a mother. One, there’s no way I can possibly keep up with her. Two, well, there was that one time I lent her a book I liked and she brought it back after a few days and asked, “Why aren’t you writing stuff like this?”
Oh, mom.
So here’s to my mother, who knows the kinds of things I write and loves me anyway.
