Today my heart is with those who lived and worked at the sites of 9/11 attacks, the emergency responders who acted with bravery and did their best to mitigate the disasters, the families of those who died on the planes or on the ground, and with the people of New York City.
So often we do you wrong by holding you up and using you. We call it unity and claim to be patriots, but all too often we invoke your names to justify ugly politics, discrimination, and violence. It dishonors us all and it cheapens your sorrow, and I am sorry.
To my Muslim friends, and to all of you who peacefully practice Islam and are hurt by those of us who believe we are at war with your religion, I am also sorry. This dishonors us, because the United States was built in part on a foundation of religious liberty, and for us to exclude you or attack you because we are fearful or angry is shameful.
As I sit in reflection on this ninth anniversary of a tragedy I can barely fathom, I am disheartened by how much more suffering has arisen from it, and how impossible it seems that these wounds will heal any time soon. So I pray.
Columbia, bloody-handed goddess born in death on land we stole, may we redeem you by learning from our mistakes and doing good instead of evil.
Libertas, may we honor you by doing right and defending the rights of those whose claims to them are infringed upon.
Justitia, help us to rightly and justly mete out punishment to those who deserve it while defending those who do not.
May today be a day of peace, and may we one day be better for this pain.
