Sick Day

bodlon: (who - Rory is fucking ACES)

So it turns out that yesterday morning’s malaise was less about the “meh, Monday” and more about catching one of the things that is going around. I more or less knew last night that I’d be home today, and in spite of my efforts this morning to bolster the body, here I am.

I’ve spent most of the day resting, drinking tea, and catching up on the Internet. If pressed, I’d say that the body is miserable, but the spirit is more or less entertained as long as the mind doesn’t have to do any sort of extended heavy lifting. I haven’t spent this much time messing about on Twitter in ages.

I’ve been productive in little fits and starts, though. I finished a piece of poetry and sent it out. I’m working on a complete revamp of an essay to send to something else. I’m continuing to draw a total blank on writing something for an anthology invite (I’ve started no less than three different stories for this thing so far). I’ve sort of vaguely considered NaNo things. The day is not a total loss. It’s just sort of achy, weak, and muddled.

Also, my roommate made cheeseburgers earlier.

And now, a tab-clearing linkdump:

- Meet Bacon. He is by all accounts a lovely, older dog who needs a forever home. My understanding is that he’s in the Atlanta area, but this is the Internet, and the Internet is magic.

- I’m working on a longer post about the five gay teen suicides that hit the news in September, but Sam Starbuck devoted a Radio Free Monday to info and resources, and The Wild Hunt offers some commentary about how certain elements in mainstream religion are contributing to a hostile culture that may make it harder for LGBTQ kids to survive.

- Speaking of that hostile culture, Man Attacks 14 Year-Old Girl Carrying Gay Pride Flag and Antigay Attacks Rock Stonewall Inn, Chelsea.

- Also, a call for submissions for a queer pagan essay anthology. If’n you’re into that kind of thing.

- Paolo Bacigalupi: This is What It Takes to Write a Novel The thing I really love about this interview is how candid Bacigalupi is about the difficulties of being a writer, and the overall tone of it. There’s this moment when the interviewer says, “So you are basically one incredibly determined motherfucker,” and the first time I read it I just laughed out loud because it’s just pitch-perfect.

- You know what’s awesome, safe, efficient, and better for the environment than automobiles? Bullet trains! Who could possibly hate bullet trains? Republican gubernatorial candidates, apparently.

- (NSFW) Fashion images in which a model is absolutely, positively being styled as classic David Bowie. Like, look-for-look. One of them they’ve even got her hair/makeup/expression so on-target it’s eerie.

- Scary: some types of miscarriage are now criminalized homicide in Utah. Some person more attentive than me pointed out that this is from Feb, and that the measure has since been defeated. Still, scary.

- Awesome: Starbucks restrooms in DC go gender neutral.

- (NSFW) Awesome art of nude pin-up ladies in ice cream sundaes by my friend Jean Kang.

- So, uh, I was thinking I would try and reduce my carbon usage by 10%. Interested in doing the same? No pressure. (Warning: comedic gore.)
