Today the Senate followed the House in voting 65-31 to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. From here it goes to the President, and then on to implementation by our armed forces. This is a genuine victory, and I think we can quite justifiably be proud of this rational and overdue step toward inclusion for gay, lesbian, and bisexual Americans.
While we’re celebrating, though, remember that this is only one victory on the path to equality. We need to repeal DOMA, we need to pass ENDA, and we need to extend the right to serve to transgender Americans (or, say, just the right to use the bathroom).
Enjoy today’s victory. It’s a good thing. Just remember that there’s still lots of work to do.
