bodlon: (cumberbatch - with book)

I think I owe you all an apology for how quiet Dimlight’s been this month. I try to post at least a couple of times a week — at least as much for myself as and anyone else — but to put it in the simplest terms, I haven’t been well. It’s the sort of month where every breath is difficult.

Basically, things kind of went to hell in my skull at the beginning of the month. I’m unfocused. I’ve let some things slide that are best left unslid, and too many hours this month have been lost because the people closest to me are sometimes the least safe for me emotionally.

The real insult here is that I’ve been trying to write about this for twenty full days. I’ve spent thousands of words on it, and all of them are wrong for various reasons (not least of which are civility, timing, and perspective). It’s a thing that’ll have to work its way out in fiction, probably.

I don’t even know how I feel about that. Frightened and angry? Motivated? Yes to all?

All I really want is for the people I’m supposed to trust to quit kicking me down the pyramid. It’s hard enough to scale this thing without getting knocked back down into the reds and yellows.

This, incidentally, is what motivates me to get up at 4:30 in the morning. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to find my grappling hook.

A bit of housekeeping about the BP spill, Corexit, etc. A friend of mine who works in the marine sciences and was part of the clean-up effort left some really useful comments over in my LiveJournal. You can read them here and here. Also, here’s the MSDS for Corexit 9500.

Which is to say that things are still kind of not great, but that FUD is alive and well in journalism, and that it’s good to be critical.

- Missouri’s State Capitol Building and the Dicks Inside of It. I can’t speak to the veracity of this piece, but this may be the best thing I’ve read all week.

- Doctor Who art, drawn on bananas. Fannishness is its own reward. Also, bananas are a great source of (slightly radioactive) potassium, and can remove heavy metals from water! I’m almost sure I’ve shared that last link already, but it’s still fantastic.

- Rarely am I so terrified of linoleum. I blame the creepily identical children.
