bodlon: (cumberbatch - with book)

This week and next week is a crunch period at the dayjob. In past years, it's a time that has provoked a fair bit of anxiety. This year, though, I feel like things are fairly well prepared-for. Plus, I just had a weekend that might just overshadow it in terms of activity and anxiety.

Friday: mom calls me to tell me she's taking an ambulance to the hospital. We spend most of the day in the ER. I spend a hell of a lot of time talking to her nephrologist.

Saturday: madness and drama getting mom OUT of the hospital so that she can see me cross the stage at commencement. Kidnapped by two of my very best friends and taken out for a night of Jenga in a bar. (Ain't no party like a bunch of nerds with access to board games.)

Sunday: last philosophy quiz, Q&A, and short essay.

So yes, I've officially graduated a week before my last final (which is the 14th). That said, Neil Gaiman's episode of Doctor Who airs that same day, and considering that I did my capstone project on his work, I can't help but appreciate the way various threads in my life are resolving. Looking forward to where things go from here.

Plus, I get to go back to writing + work instead of writing + work + school, which is going to be the most wonderful thing in the world.

- A charming little song about not liking things. I want to have a group of people prepared to sing this at any moment. It's so perfect for so many things.

- Have finally started reading Digger. I'm really liking it so far. I don't read a lot of webcomics these days, but I really love graphic novel style storytelling. This is good stuff so far.

- Cheerleader Has To Pay $45,000 To The School That Kicked Her Off The Squad For Refusing To Cheer For Her Rapist. Monstrous. If anyone gets wind of a fund to help her pay this, please pass the word.

- Remember the woman in Akron, OH who was found guilty of two felonies for enrolling her child in the 'wrong' school? It's happening again, and this time the woman -- who is homeless -- may face 20 years in prison. Hey legal system: could we stop making examples of poor black women now? Or are you still sore over that whole integration thing?

- Zombie Marie Curie may be one of my favorite things this morning.

- So here's an interesting bit of news from Pew: Republicans consume news that matches their views more than Dems As someone who mainly affiliates with the Dems so that I can vote in primaries -- to say I'm fairly left of their current platform is a bit like saying Chicago's a bit far from Rio -- this doesn't surprise me. Most of the people I know who have similar politics to mine consume news from diverse sources. Nor, incidentally, does the idea that people on the Internet gravitate toward spaces that cater to their views or meet their needs. In many ways, that's the best thing about the Internet. Other times, though, I worry about the net result of spending all that time in an echo chamber.

- Other groups emerging to fill the gap left by closing news agencies. I have mixed feelings on this. Obviously there's amusement -- In the absence of a news bureau, people start a news bureau? -- but having watched the nonsense going down with Huffington Post, free bloggers, and freelancers, I worry that this is just another way that they current system exploits writers. Which, where news is concerned, can be a risky proposition.

- The Wild Hunt takes the Washington Times to task for its total inability to parse the difference between indigenous European religion in antiquity and modern paganism in a bizarre editorial criticizing a religious space for pagans at the United States Air Force Academy. I mean, it's the Washington Times. Expectations are not high to begin with. But still.

- An interesting post over at The Atlantic about rejoicing in the deaths of our enemies in the wake of the strike that killed Bin Laden. Literature, as always, giving me more to think about. Also, 60 Minutes has posted <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504803_162-20060530-10391709.html</a>.</p>
