bodlon: (cumberbatch - with book)

So after seeing some of the perplexity on Facebook yesterday about the solstice, when winter begins, etc. I wrote up this little bit of usefulness. It's pagan flavored, but astronomy and the natural world is non-sectarian. Enjoy!

And now, some links I've been saving:

- One of my favorite artists has done an interview over at the Paperblanks blog. Check it out, then go check out her stuff as well.

- Sigrid Ellis talks "girl Lego." I think she hits the nail on the head, both in terms of the failure of the folks who make Lego to be smart and inclusive in their base product line, and why even something that irritates me terribly -- being the bisection and pinkification of a segment of things in order to designate girl appropriateness -- is still a step forward. It's not the step I want, but it's at least a half-assed acknowledgement and a toe in the door.

- Jim C. Hines explains, in comic format, one of the real-world hazards of being a writer.

- From the department of obviousness: Legalization of same-sex marriage may make gay men healthier. All I can think is that of course this helps. Being able to worry less often about basic householder rights, access in a medical emergency, and the civil legitimacy of one's family unit drastically reduces ambient stress.

- Sam Starbuck rings in the end times with a carol to the elder gods and old ones.

- Newt Gingrich or Supervillian? When I saw this link, I sort of rolled my eyes and thought, "cute idea, but they're going to have to stretch a little." And then I took the quiz and discovered it's actually surprisingly difficult to tell the difference. Fascinating stuff.
