Challenge: post 5 songs (or more) that start with the letter you're given. Let me know if you'd like a letter.
Lady Gaga, "Alejandro"
This really ought to come with the subtitle, "In the dark future of Lady Gaga there is only war." Yeah, okay. Only two of you got that joke. I'm a nerd. (Warning: this video is kind of NSFW.)
Joy Division, "Autosuggestion"
From dance to dirge. Have I mentioned I really like Joy Division? I really like Joy Division. With regard to this song, I've always really enjoyed the build from near silence to noise. Great bleak catharsis music.
Morrissey, "America Is Not The World"
One of the reasons I enjoy Morrissey's work is that he has a way of writing love songs about the faults of the objects of his affection. "America Is Not The World" is beautiful because so much of it is about what's wrong about us, and it's a little cruel, but it's also really loving and true, and acknowledges the good and the great potential that exists even beneath the failure. It feels intimate.
The Smiths, "Ask"
This song is such a fantastic combination of sweet and uncomfortable. "Ask me, ask me, ask me!" is so friendly and pleading and open, but then again "nature is a language, can't you read?" and it starts to feel a bit more sinister. I'm only just a child of the Cold War, but by the time we've gotten to "if it's not love then it's the bomb that will bring us together," I'm in. Honestly, it all feels uncomfortably familiar. I should probably get out of the house more often.
How To Destroy Angels, "A Drowning"
How To Destroy Angels is Trent Reznor's new band with his wife Mariqueen Maandig and Atticus Ross. They're a lot of what I like about recent Nine Inch Nails, but different as well. Mariqueen's voice is fantastic. I've been known to write with the EP on repeat. This track is sort of soothing and tense all at once for me. It's got that trademark NIN build going for it, and feels like a chant. Slightly trancy.
