Thursday night at midnight US Central is last call for this month’s Hold Something. Can’t swing it until after Thursday? Don’t worry! Folks who subscribe after midnight tomorrow will get stories starting in February.

Also, based on what I’m finding as I check international rates for folks who ask, the UK rate is sufficiently close postage-wise for story mailings that I’m declaring it the International rate for now and will update the buttons when I’ve got half an hour to commit to making sure all the code is in the right places. Simplicity: it’s nice!

- I didn’t realize the scale of the flooding in Queensland until saw this map and read this post. Queensland, incidentally, is bigger than Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Indiana COMBINED. 75% of it is affected. Please check out the links above and help if you can.

- A few weekends ago I was talking with a friend about how I sometimes prepare blog posts ahead of time and schedule them in WordPress, and how I wondered about the implications of being dead while my online persona was still active. This week, I came across this: Cyberspace When You’re Dead.

- From the blog mentioned in that article, a link too weird not to share (Warning: some possibly NSFW items on page) and Aldous Huxley reading Brave New World.

- XKCD earwormed me this morning, but it’s entirely worth it. The hover text is fantastic if you know the song. Which I do, thanks to Sherlock and Star Trek fan vids.

- I can’t decide if it’s possible, as a man, to wear any of these shirts and not be an asshole, but oh. I laugh.

- Snow! Also, antimatter! Weather is serious business.

- Transgender Vets Want Military Access for Own via Erynn999, who shares some notes at the bottom about service members and name changes. I confess I’m not chomping at the bit to join up with one of the major branches, but I’ve sometimes wished I could join the National Guard because of their role in disaster relief. Under the law, I can’t do that. Granted I’m also asthmatic, so the point may be moot, but can we really afford to turn people away who want to serve?

- Sarah Palin calls criticism “blood libel.” It’s like somebody gave her a shovel and she just Can’t. Stop. Digging.

- One year after the earthquake, the people of Haiti are still suffering. (Warning: triggers for sexual assault.)

- Did I mention I went to see Howl on Friday? No? Well I did. My own experience was sufficiently personal that this feels like the wrong venue to really articulate it, but this review over at Lambda Literary is good and clear and tells you everything you need to know (even if I loathe the tag-line about “generation Adderall”).

And now, bed.

I *hope* I just signed up for HS for a year.

Have I mentioned how much PayPal confuses me?

...no, I think it didn't work. I'll have to confirm my PayPal account, *then* sign up. Gah.

...grief, I suppose PayPal's all about security, but their levels of confirmation are a pain in the backside. Rest assured I'll be a yearly subscriber... just as soon as this wretched internets-payment processor will let me.
