Just got in from seeing Black Swan. Finally.

It’s been running at our local arthouse cinema since 12/22, and I’d more or less assumed that I’d missed it, especially since I’d treated myself to Howl instead last time and I’m not used to things running for weeks and weeks.

And yet, there it was tonight. And there I was. Or, at least, I think it was (and I was).

Seeing Black Swan was genuinely not unlike paying to have a psychotic break. Maybe it was the draft cider I bought on the way in or maybe I’m already well on my way to Zyprexa (ask me sometime about the time I confused that drug’s name with Zyrtec while I was trying to pick up a hot pharmacy tech), but I came out of this film in a state of bizarre hypervigilance. Noises, colors, voices, everything felt like it had been turned up. A lot.

Which, frankly, is a hell of a state in which to go to a grocery store for rubber bands on the way home.

The other thing about Black Swan was how central matters of the body were. The sheer physicality of the film was impressive. It’s a dance film, and that shouldn’t surprise me, but I feel like Black Swan is almost violently embodied in a way other films I’ve seen aren’t. It was so effective for me that I actually moved to the edge of my seat during it and stayed there.

I blame Mila Kunis. And want to listen to Minotti now. (And yes, I know that The Medium != Swan Lake. Blame my poor education.)

- Thank you, Hyperbole and a Half, for helping me decide what I want to do for my birthday.

- Like comic books? Like badass crafted pendants? Two of my friends have started up an Etsy shop called Fugitive Pieces and are making some really excellent upcycled comic book jewelry, as well as other printed matter. They’re doing a sale right now, so be sure to check them out!
