bodlon: (who - Rory is fucking ACES)

As many of you are aware, I’m taking courses to finish up the World’s Longest BA in English. What many of you may not be aware of is that Hermione Granger took lessons from me in being That Student. You know the one.

Case in point, correcting my prof in class when the arsenic-eating extremophile from Mono Lake came up.

(In fairness, I slipped a little on a quiz because I couldn’t remember quite how to do blood type inheritance, but…well, let’s just say last night featured a lot of commentary and leave it at that.)

I got feedback last night on my NYC Midnight Short Screenplay Challenge first round entry. It’s funny, because I’m not usually a fan of these sorts of contests, but it seemed like a really interesting way to explore another way of telling stories, and the entry fee seemed like a reasonable amount to pay to do that in a semi-structured way.

The judges used words like “real charm,” “strong narrative arc,” “natural, believable dialogue,” and “this would be a nice visual,” all of which I was really pleased about. Critique-wise, I mainly got dinged for what on reflection really was a strange character decision, and for not having quite enough initial character development. I confess, I’m not sure how I could have fit that in without a shoehorn, but shoehorn one must, I suppose.

The second challenge runs this weekend, and I’m hoping to get at least a partial draft written tonight. If I do particularly well, I may advance into the next round. If not? Well, it’s still worth the experience.

- It’s nice to know that the United States Department of Fear exists to keep us up all night, every night, no matter where we are. (Especially if that happens to be anywhere near someone with the last name Assange.)

- My friend J.C. Hay introduced me to the existence of Hatsune Miku, an entirely fabricated idol singer from Japan. There’s even a clip on YouTube of her performing, which is one of those “we live in the future” moments that blows my mind. (If you’re curious, yes I can see my copy of William Gibson’s Idoru from here.)

- Via the ACLU, a look at where our personal information goes.

- Filed under things which couldn’t be safe for work if they tried: a really fantastic promo for a burlesque show called The Slutcracker. I clearly live in the wrong city.

- Exhibit B for how I live in the wrong city: A Christmas Carol, in the original Klingon.
