Thing the first: it’s not just Women’s History Month, but International Women’s Day. I’m celebrating by supporting the reproductive rights of the women in my life by standing beside them in support of Planned Parenthood.
Other ways I’m celebrating:
- enjoying my copy of Whedonistas (Amazon, B&N, Mad Norwegian), which has an awful lot of words in it for such a slender volume. I am suspicious that Mad Norwegian Press is run by Time Lords.
- Thinking about women characters, and how to write them more effectively (including writing more stories that are Bechdel-compliant).
- Thinking about this James Bond video made for International Women’s Day, featuring Daniel Craig and Dame Judi Dench.
- Being grateful for some of the awesome things women inventors have given us, such as computer programming (Ada Lovelace for the concepts and first work, Admiral Grace Murray Hopper for COBOL and compilers), windshield wipers (Mary Anderson), the circular saw (Tabitha Babbitt), the modern paper bag (Margaret Knight), and Kevlar (Stephanie Kwolek).
- Educating myself about the wage gap, and other forms of institutionalized discrimination that women face.
- Being a feminist, even though I’m a guy, and remembering to talk about that sometimes. Especially around other guys. (Also, not to give up if they blow me off because I’m queer and trans, but to remember that homophobia and transphobia are made of the same stuff as misogyny, and that all of these efforts toward equality have broad effects.)
- Remembering to do this kind of thing the other 364 days (and other 11 months) of the year, too. 52% of the population doesn’t stop existing because the world quits paying attention to them the rest of the time.
