I didn’t get any writing in yesterday.

This wasn’t entirely unintentional. I’m working on a piece right now that has me stressed on so many levels that it makes it hard to do the work. Intellectually I know that once I finish with it I can move onto something less troubling, but that’s a bit like saying, “Look, you just need to get your hand caught in a car door six or seven more times!” in terms of appeal.

So yesterday I skived off and played a bunch of Dragon Age (which is less not-work than it sounds because I’m paying attention to how they construct dialogue and tell the story, and how the story fits into the world), watched Born Into Brothels on Netflix instant, and finally took the time to convert the terrifying bounty of pears that was in the fridge into 3 jars of pear butter.

Today, I know I really need to finish this thing. I’ve spent too much time on it, and the time spent whinging over how writing this feels like pulling glass shrapnel out of the inside of my throat and chest is time spent with that shrapnel still in place. So.

From car doors to shrapnel. I bring all of the nice imagery. Mmm.

ACLU Argues President Does Not Have Unchecked Authority to Kill You. While this is a relief generally it disturbs me that the ACLU has to say this at all.

Things that made me happy: 12 women creatives as men and James Franco in lipstick. My only gripe is that the stylists in the first link seem bizarrely to be working out of the bit of the Venn diagram where the Industrial Revolution meets Tim Nordwind from OK GO. Also, Franco’s in The Advocate right now in an interview about playing gay and his role as Alan Ginsburg in Howl.

Also, if you think for a second that I’m not excited about Daniel Radcliffe in a Hammer adaptation of The Woman in Black you are gravely mistaken.

Watching dogs sleep is possibly one of the very finest things in the world. One of my girls, Ada, is resting on her side about a yard away from me, twitching and snoring. Every so often she makes a muffled “woof”-ing noise, or her tail thumps on the floor.

Hooray, dogs.
