So I needn’t have worried about the snow.
Feb. 2nd, 2011 04:08 pmSo Tuesday morning looked kind of thin, right? Little bit of fluff in the air, little bit of blowing. The sort of weather I most certainly would have driven to work in.
And then all the snow ever came. Think I’m joking? Even Captain Jack’s feeling a little bit stymied:
Today’s been clear and cold and beautiful. I’ve been digging a path down a driveway where the snow starts at about 18″ and ends — or presumably will end, since I haven’t got there yet — probably around my waist. Bit of a moot point, though, when the road isn’t clear, and the paths people have been trying to drive on are a full foot higher up than my driveway. Doh.
So yes, it’s been an interesting birthday. My roommate picked up some Doctor Who comic trade paperbacks for me (Frobisher FTW!), and mom got me this print, which will need a print as soon as I can get out of my neighborhood and into a frame shop. Me, I’ll be baking a cake and playing Rock Band 3 on Xbox live tonight. Because it’s warm here. And there’s food. And dogs.
- I’ve mentioned The Land, Sea, and Sky a couple of times, but if you’re interested in hearing what I did for Gwyl Ffraed, you can check it out here.
- Torchwood filming pics have started coming through fast and furious from both semi-official and wildly unofficial sources. SFX has a collection of them, Alun Vega (tumblr & posterus) covers Wales brilliantly and writes about the experience in ways that make my heart swell with shared excitement, and there’s some good stuff showing up on Facebook as well. (Also, spoilers. Duh.)
- Phillip Pullman on why library cuts and the bidding system proposed for funds is absurd and cruel because it doesn’t just take libraries away: it pits communities against one another. As an adult the amount of time I’ve put libraries to use has fluctuated wildly from rare visits to practically living in one. What’s consistent is how much better my world has been for having libraries around for me to learn in, to spend time, and as Pullman says, that’s well beyond profit.
- Lesbian couple in marries in Iowa and is turned down for new drivers licenses in South Dakota. Meanwhile, in Iowa, the legislature is trying to roll back marriage equality in the state. 19-year-old engineering student and sixth-generation Iowan Zach Wahls, who grew up with same-sex parents, spoke out against that effort at a public forum on that same resolution.
