Ooh, worms! We have very happy worms inna bucket in our basement, nomming up all sorts of fruit and veg leavings and making happy soil. Worm composting is rather awesome.

I've cannibalized a pair of Rubbermaid-style tubs (one is the "outside" tub and has holes around the middle, the other slips into it and has holes in the top, bottom, and around the rim). I've filled it with this week's rat litter, which I'm planning to moisten tonight so that it's all comfy and awesome when my wiggly buddies arrive.

I'm terrified I'll make Real Compost by accident and kill them, or that the pH of the ratstuff will be bad for them on account of the urine. On the other hand, I've read about people recycling rat litter really effectively, so...yeah. Insights?

Well, sunastria is the worm guy in our household, so he's a better source of info than I am. I know he got some helpful info from the folks he ordered his worms from, and he also found a book called "Worms Eat My Garbage" that goes into detail about how to compost with worms effectively. I do know that he uses shredded, soaked newspaper for worm bedding, but we have no experience with giving them used animal bedding. I'll ask sunastria if he's open to sharing worm-keeping advice.
