I have a toy time-turner in my writing office.

It's one of those good natured "ha-ha, I'm a writer so I'm busy" things most of the time, but April -- a month when I've got four significant deadlines within 10 days of each other -- is the sort of month where it stops being charming fun and starts turning into a reminder that I don't have the luxury of holding down two competing timelines in order to finish this stuff.

This does really strange things to my work. It's incredibly difficult to make good words when all I can think is "I NEED MORE WORDS! I NEED MORE WORDS! WHERE ARE ALL MY DAMN WORDS?!" Too little downtime and I start to get rebellious. Too much downtime and...well, not enough words.

As you can expect, I have elevated my current personal threat level to A Hot Cup Of Tea. All further threat levels are represented by various howls, flails, and gnashing sounds.

The glimmer on the horizon is this: by the end of the week, I'll have this month's Hold Something sent out. By the weekend, my rough draft for my capstone will be in. By next week, the current novella draft will be wending its way to its destination. By the 24th, my capstone paper will be in. I walk on May 7th. My Ethics final is May 14th (no, I have no idea either), which coincides precisely with the middle of some other, unrelated crunch time.

Somewhere in here, I'm actually enjoying this. I knew more or less what I was getting into, and I'm going to be damn proud of myself at the end of May when I can look back at the smoking remains of these next forty-five days or so.

In the meantime, please keep your heads and arms inside The Mixer at all times. Otherwise, I can't be responsible for what might land near the Sno-Cone concession, or guarantee the sort of mail your family might receive from Pueblo, Colorado.
